I've just been 'loaned' a passive pre-amp whilst my valve pre-amp is getting a minor (non-sound altering) problem repaired. It's such a revealation in the improvement it has given what was a pretty good system (it's a good pre-amp) that it's got me wondering:

what is a pre-amp actually for apart from volume adjustment and input switching? What do we actually need all those valves or transistors for?

Why don't more people use passive pre-amps?
