I just picked up a used Adcom GFA-5300 amplifier for two-channel TV/movie duty. (I had been using my Conrad Johnson MV-75, but decided I really needed to use some thing more practical) With the TV off, and the amplifier on, I can hear some buzzing coming from the speakers. It's faint, but there's still more noise coming from the speakers with the idling Adcom than the MV-75 in the TV application. And there's more noise coming through the speakers with the idling Adcom in the TV application than happens in my two-channel audio-only system (well, this is dependent on how quite the preamp tubes are). The amplifier itself also buzzes a bit, which can be heard when close to the amplifier.
I had an Adcom GFA-555, used in two-channel audio systems only, which I remember being very quiet. The Odyssey Stratos I owned (nice value, this amp, me thinks), was also quiet. Again, this amp was used for two-channel audio only. But, they were all quiet.
I'm not using a preamp, just the TV for switching and volume control.
Now, for a quick set up and check of the new/used amplifier, I had initially placed the 5300 on top of a subwoofer. Moving it away from the sub and into its cabinet home did reduce noise quite a bit, but there's still some noise there.
The amplifier otherwise seems to sound and work just fine. I'll be leaving it on for a while to see if some on time might help.
So, how quiet should I expect an Adcom 5300 to be?
Thanks for your replies.
