I own an AA Puccini SE, 2002 vintage (maybe the last model in the line?). I am currently using it as a preamp for some new Bottlehead Paramount 300B amps.
The Paramounts gave me all the goodness of the Puccini SE plus (interestingly) more resolution/transparency and maybe a smidge more depth/openness, and no extra harshness, etc.. With upgraded teflon and PIO caps in the Paramounts, I have about $1400 invested.
I am looking/lusting for a new tube preamp to replace the Puccini SE, possibly the Rogue Perseus. That would be ~$3200 worth of amp/pre, might be a bit over what you wanted to spend. Actually, it's more than I wanted to spend! Oh well ...
If your speakers/room can be driven with 8W, highly recommended.
