Definitely get the Ref 3! It will make whatever amp you use sound great. I would reccomend getting a used VT100 Mk2 or mk3. It will drive about anything. You will like the combo very much, and you will never be content with solid state after that, I will bet. If you get the Ref 3 used, like I did, you will have about 10K invested in amp and preamp, and your preamp will keep up with whatever amps you use in the future, but I think you will find the VT100 tough to improve on. I went from a VT100 mk2 to a VT200, which is a little better, mainly because it manhandles speakers like nobody's business, but the VT100 was excellent as well. I have found no solid state amp I like as well, and I have been trying a lot of amps for the summer months!
