I bought a mint used st70 it sounded fine $300, the I bought, built and intstalled the Tubes for HiFI VTA board with upgraded caps $150, Bam I have new modern amp. Then I found some seamans El34 tubes from germany $150. All I can tell you is I will never get rid of this amp. The punch in the low end, all the detail I can hear throughout the rest of the frequecy range is priceless to me. I happen to have a FI x 2a3 amp which is considered a very good SET amp know for its sound and I have a pr of Klipsh Lascallas, I have compared both and my Modded ST70 has all the right stuff.

I would say as long as your using speakers that are rated more than 88db/watt, you will be very happy.
