You wouldn't need an active preamp when using ANY passive preamp.The Promi is MUCH more than a volume control....
TVC's are a whole difft bread altogether. If they will work with your system, seriously consider one. To 'work' with your system depends a lot on your amp's compatibility.
The designer of the Promi has come up with an active preamp to go in-line with the TVC, but you only need a TVC to have world class preamp performance.
The Channel Islands VPC-2 is a good passive preamp, but the Promi beats the pants off it.
