Eastern Electric Minimax vs. more expensive preamps?

Hi all,

I currently have an Eastern Electric Minimax (original version) and was either considering upgrading it (Bill at Morningstar says the improvement is significant), or buying something nicer. I previously had a Herron VTSP-1a, and actually preferred my Minimax. The sound seemed more open, airier, a bit cleaner, and brass insturments sounded a bit more realistic on the Minimax over the Herron, which sounded less involving, less musical, and darker in comparison.

If I was to replace the Minimax, how much to I have to spend to get something with better sound? Any recommendations as far as tube preamps go that would be a step up?
