I think "soaking" just the wire in glue prior to attachment would also provide UV and oxidation protection.

The foil used for window alarms(Radio Shack) usually incudes some Tin so it will tear easily if the glass is broken. This is not what one wants for a speaker panel.

Naturally, you can cut household aluminum foil with a razor and straight edge. Again, change the blade frequently, oil the cut line, hold blade at an accute angle. I put down a couple layers of mylar packing tape on my bench to cut into. I think the thin 20 micron foil would be best. Only $3 to experiment.
