I just got a pair and WOW!
Very nice, very nice indeed.
With no disrespect to Siegfried, or to you, I just cant imagine how a speaker using a single ended cone driver can match, or even approach, an array of 4 push pull ribbons ?And, as good as Dr. Linkwitz crossovers may be, they are still a crossover.
The push pull ribbons in an RM 40 operate from 166 to 10 k.
That means no crossover in the Midrange.I have a great deal of respect for the Orions, for you, and Siegfried.
And, I haven't heard them.
BUT, I have heard just about every other cone speaker known to man, and none I have heard overall can touch an RM 40.
Not my 801's, my Vortex screens, Vandersteen 5a's, Thiel 3.6's, none.
I have to admit I was skeptical about them, but every review I have read about them is coming true in my home.
They absolutely anhiliate my old MG3a's, and my current SMGA's too.
The guy I bought them from just bought the big Sound labs.
I heard them, and they imaged well, and had "hyper detail", but had a steely sound when pushed.
He was using a SIM audio monster amp too, but preamp was an Integra surround sound unit.
that could have been the problem ?
But in my home, using tubes all the way to the Moscode 600 tube/mosfet hybrid, the 40's sound even better then the big Soundlabs I heard.
And guess what ?
They will play Loud, KA7NIQ loud, and laugh at you.
The louder they get, the better they sound, until the room comes in to play.
I dont think any single ended driver, be it a cone or Magnepan, etc, can match a push pull driver.
Perhaps that's why Magnepans best, the 20.1 is all push pull ?Like I said, i have not heard the Orions, and they were on my list before I stumbled into the RM 40's.
But I honestly cant imagine owning them anymore.
I am one very happy camper, and i am not easy to please.
I will soon be selling all my other speakers, and perhaps buying a new boat, or a Harley.
With my Moscode 600, tube line stage, and Lite Dac 72 tube dac, i am "there".
I plan to buy some Paul Speltz anti cables, even though I dont really believe in them, just in case.
Maybe some better interconnects, but now, finally, it's time to just be wowed every day by the RM 40's.
I do plan eventually on upgrading my subwoofers, and MAYBE, just maybe, explore some bi amp options.
But I feel no need to really do anything.
My system is good enough right now to send almost any audiophile home with envy.
I am in a tube rolling phase, instead of looking for speakers.
And finally, I have found the speaker that has given me the freedom to dump the other 8 pairs I own, because it eats their lunch.
I cant even listen to them anymore.
No more Magnepans for me, unless they are 20.1's, maybe ...
And, no more cone speakers, even Orion's are off my list.
The push pull Neo magnet drivers have spoiled me, no single ended high mass cone driver, no matter what, can match the speed and transparency of a low mass, push pull driver.
I am one happy camper, finally!
