Although I cannot give you a direct comparison between the sound of my MMG's with a sub and the 1.6's, they are both based on the same technology. My MMG's & subs sound so good that I would recommend a pair of MMG's and a $500 sub such as the HSU VTF-2's that I own. I believe this will give you most if not all of the 1.6's midrange and treble attributes while giving you substantially deeper bass. And you will spend about $500 less than the 1.6's alone. I would be surprised if the combination disappointed you. BTW, the subs have a 30 day money back guarantee and the MMG's a 60 day. So you could try them in your room for 30 days and only risk return shipping charges of $25-$50. Thats what I did and none of it went back. Just My opinion, I hope this helps.
