89db sensitivity and an 8-ohm load

That is my tribute to Erik B. and Rakim. Hey Rakim, what you playing?

89db sensitivity and an 8-ohm load, B.

No maggies?

Not today.

Celestion 5's. My college speakers were Celestion 3's. Finally found a nice used pair of the 5's.

12x17 room; 1/3's rule friggen never fails; speakers are in exact same spot Magnepan LRS's were; same ML Depth sub crossed at same point (55hz).

Details: There is really something to be said for your basic modern monitor with high sensitivity and the 8 ohm standard routine. Everything from volume control on the preamp, ability of speaker to be police but perky at low volumes, and the friendliness of a 5-inch midwoof at low and mid volumes, and so on -- undeniable pleasant things. Haydn sounds great right now.

Critical Summary: weakness is strength; the friendly 5-inch midwoof sings and croons, as the 1-inch metallic dome tweeter is nice, really nice, but it's a different device. The crossover is 4k. No such thing as a free lunch as the friendly midwoof gets up to within 3k of that. I have not tried any Schubert Leider. I might opt not to. I'll start hearing these issues soon enough.

Only happiness take: The Celestion 5's make me want to go back in time and listen to NPR without waking anyone up. But also, to repeat, there really is something to be said for a basic monitor with these kinds of specs. The "while not waking anyone" part is gift.

I'll do the LRS's in the new TV room for a bit. These are perfect for low volume lisening to pre-1940 stuff. Mellowing, very mellowing. And polite. But perky.
