Can I just disconnect a bad panel in my Quads?

I have a problem with one of my Quad 989:s. The speaker obviously needs replacement of one of the "bass" panels. I don't like the idea to drive 8 hours to deliver it to a technician; it has been there before. Instead, can I just disconnect the bad panel and live without?

I realize that the speaker will not work as intended, but I could live with a little unbalanced sound, if that is what will happen.

Any ideas?

Per.

PS. I am fully aware of the high voltages inside the speaker, and what that means in terms of handling it.
