Well I call it Styrofoam, in general terms, as opposed to wood. But the manufacturer says it's " high density polystyrene", and "high density EPS", so you can discuss with him what the specifics are.I can tell you this. In order to fit and sink in the diffusers into the oak frames I built for mine, I had to flip over the diffusers and plane a good 1/4" off the backs. No unwanted damage what so ever.
One important point is these must be painted in order to achieve their full potential. They will absorb more than reflect when left unpainted.
