Thank you all for your very valuable input and generosity. Regarding Dave's comment: You simply need to find a piece of software that allows volume settings above the 100% level.
I tried MPC last night which has that option and it works. Can Dave or anyone explain what is happening when I boost volume in software above the 100% level (as opposed to using a dac with greater output or an active preamp) and if that affects the quality of sound in any way? If it does not my problem is solved.
