Not all gain functions are executed as an afterthought add on. Look for a real DAC/Pre where the design took the pre/gain section seriously - like by including line inputs. You will want the output to be well north of the 2V nominally needed to provide some headroom in driving the power amps. Perhaps the Chord Mojo will just about do it for you. Schiit have low cost simple preamps that might be transparent enough for you not to regret adding it in.
