I now have two 100+wpc SS power amps as well as the two LEAK St20s rethought and rebuilt.
[There is also a Perreaux power amp on offer.]
One is a former professional stage amp with gain controls and balanced inputs (and RCA's just added.) It is a Fostex 300 which will give 100wpc/8 and 150/4ohms. It is very heavy with a big toroidal transformer.
It has just been serviced, haven't had the bill but < $Au 200.
The other one is a HK870 100wpc/8, but with 60 amps of instantaneous current reserve. It has also been serviced and had its protection circuits made more effective.
Note that the 63s - see my recent post - have now had their OEM protection wound back and the input cap bypassed/replaced. They will be a lot easier to drive.
So, which one would you use into the QUADs and which for bass only duty?
For Winter duty I will try out the two "Once Were LEAK St20s" one in UL driving the Quads and one in pentode mode doing <150Hz OR <80Hz bass only duty. See below.
Note that it is a smallish room.
