I did not have that experience with the flush mount ceiling but then it was such a long time ago. On the other hand, I do need to go to rather extreme lengths to get solid deep bass with some power behind it. To get the bottom octave filled out I use wall loading and a face forwards positioning of the bass panels to uniquely capture the long dimension's resonance freq and the room's tangential mode. That way the 25-40 hz range is elevated and response is quite substantial even below that.
