Your situation is just what the tweeter attenuators are made for. Dont be afraid.
Can you put some diffusion (e.g. tall plants) behind the speakers? That may help too.
For placement, one trick i use is to play a mono signal. When the soundstage is a point or vertical line, and it is stable and doesnt change with volume or frequency, then it will probably be good in stereo.
