Reccomendations on staining wood side rails

My MMGs came with black side rails, I wanted to get back to more of a wood look. I stripped the paint off, sanded and applied a coat of red mahogany stain, the color come out way purple. Anyone have recommendations on products and color? I was looking to try and get a dark cherry color. I figured with the dark grain highlighted by the previous black paint I needed something on the darker side..
