RE: Amplification for Magnestand MMGs

I'd swing more towards a tubed preamp rather than a power amp in that price range. Plenty of pre-amps in the used arena on Agon/ebay etc., whereas a good, strong, tube amp under $1K (or even $2.5K) is rarer than unicorn poop. I found my VTL tube monos for $1500 (pair) on ebay but are just as rare. Regarding those, I've had them on my Gunned MMGs and although they play sweet, pure, music, they won't deliver the 'humph' of a good kick drum or difficult classical passages at high levels. Now if you're in a apartment or need to listen at low levels then yes, a nice decent tube amp will deliver. Anything other, you'll need a strong solid state amp or tons of tube power. Hybrids are another choice but again, I'd personally lean towards a tubed pre-amp. Good luck-
