Sounds like you have already decided to buy the 1.6 before listening to them. As someone who owns (owned) MMG/SMGa/(1.6) I would suggest you hang onto your MMG until you have had a chance to live with the 1.6 for a while.
If you use your speakers in a multimedia setup (disclosure: I do not) I suspect you will like the 1.6 as they play loud with big bass and pronounced top end. Padding the tweeter with a series resistor is an odd thing to do to a high end speaker in my experience--but for many people is a necessary measure taken with the 1.6. Some might argue that my QUADs have this "feature" built in as their impedance falls precipitously in the upper treble range and above.
FYI: To my ears the 1.6 do not sound like any of the other Magneplanars that I have owned going back to the Tympani-1C. For me this resulted in listener fatigue and eventual resale.
