RE: What is the purpose of the rear wave in dipole speakers? Can you just put planars in a box?

You are making a lot of false assumptions. You assume a box loudspeaker is "Normal". In fact sound radiating from an instrument is closer to any other configuration loudspeaker except a box. Most the sound energy from a Box speaker that reaches you ear is not the direct sound but the reverberation and reflected sound (those two are not the same - ICYDNK). The Box speaker may offer a relatively flat frequency response for the initial arrival - but because of the box design and the driver & baffle geometry the off axis sound radiation will have low frequency bias compared to mid and higher frequencies.
A planar speaker (electrostatic or magnetic planar) does have a more balanced total sound power that radiates the room. Of course omnidirectional loudspeakers also have that characteristic. The beauty of the dipole is that there is a strong "Null in the energy ate all frequency to the side of the loudspeaker... This means you do not have to treat your room for the first side reflection - the reflection that has a major influence on imaging coherency. Also since most planars operate as a vertical line source, there is a much lower level discrete reflections from the floor and ceiling.

You do not want to absorb the rear reflection of a planar loudspeaker - diffusion is the best technique of treatment. And I also dispute the "large distance they need to be from the rear wall. A planar can be placed juts two feet from the rear wall and still provide pinpoint imaging and smoothness. Almost all speakers (Boxes and Planars) benefit from out in the room placement - if only to allow more diffusion and less reflection to occur in the listening room.

Read a little about loudspeaker configurations and room acoustics from www.Linkwitzlab.com for more enlightenment. Dipoles do not have to be planars.
