As JBen pointed out, it gives you better overall sensitivity and requires the tweeters to be near each other ( or have one disconnected) and equal distance from you - I expect the mid/bass panels should also be equidistant but I am not sure - so try it out both ways.As to bass extension, the wing effect should extend the response under the resonance freq by quite a bit. Perhaps by 1/2 an octave. SPL capacity would generally increase 6db before you reach the threshold volume of slap so will give you more headroom.
As Davey noted you will need to consider the amp's output at 8 ohms if you put them in series or make sure that you can put the speakers in parallel - in which case you can draw more power if your amp is rated at 2 ohms. If it isn't then you should get one that is.
