Well, I have been asking myself the very same thing.
Why did they design the speaker so that the stators were not firmly anchored?
The L-profile is too thin to make any firm mounting and it's only suspended at the top and the bottom with rubber.
The first design of the ESL 63 they had different outer profiles so the stators were screwed on directly.
BUT... they had cut sections out from the sides so the mounting angle for the stators would flex.
It seems that this was something they were aiming for.
Maybe the frame were too light to have the stators firmly mounted and that may have caused higher resonances produced by the frame itself.
With a more giving and flexible mounting it would render resonances much lower in the frequencies.
Cheers!
Here You can see on the earlier model how they cut out part of the frame to make the mounting rail flexible at the mounting joints.
The one who succeeded was the one who didn't know it was impossible.
