"One advantage of active biamping, which is not often mentioned, is that it protects the tweeters. Basically the tweeters are damaged when clipping occurs. With a single amp, when clipping occurs -- usually due to the high power demands of the low frequency signal -- the tweeter suffers. With active biamping, even if you manage to get the woofer amp to clip the tweeter is isolated and unaffected."
Although not possibly related to a single vs. a bi-amp application nor clipping, could that possibly explain the difference I hear when comparing the passive Magnepan XO-1 to the active Marchand XM44-2 when listening to my bi-amped Tympani IVa? Namely that by active bi-amping this speaker's T/M is isolated from its Bass drivers. Whereas when using the simple and god-forsaken XO-1 there is no such isolation. (For some reason?, I still find the sound more pleasing to my aged ears when using the XO-1.)
