So was the improvement due to the choke, or due to the loss of that steel jumper. I suspect it was the choke but you never know. Try replacing the choke with a piece of 12G copper wire (cut a small piece from an electric cable or THHN wire). But as long as you are getting rid of that jumper, why not just eliminate the terminal and hard wire the choke in place. And as JBen says lose the fuse. Both tweaks can be done in a few minutes with a solder iron without removing the socks.
Give me some time and I probably can come up with a few other things you can do :).
