The tweeter attenuator, and a choke in it, is not snake oil.
It's perfectly normal to use an attenuator and part of the factory design to accommodate different room liveness & reflectivity.
Personally I use a 1.5 ohm resistor in series with the choke in my 3.6's (which are fairly 'hot', and I have a reflective room).
