I found it very necessary. I do not have a bright room....I have auditioned tube amplifiers with Maggies. Unless I was willing to spend 4x the price of the speakers on tube amps (they did not deliver a crisp bass sound in the lower price categories)...(Not fair to mention brands) Impedance problems (tube preamp) into 47K precludes many excellent tube preamps without internal adjustments. I am using a Vintage Crown Sl2 preamp, which does provide space depth and bass clarity but is a bit raw. I found the change in adding an $8 chokes dramatic and pleasurable. I am using the Emotiva XPA1's mono amps which I think are fairly neutral so they reacted positively to the choke rather than the 1 ohm resistor.
