I can share the difference between a 3.7i and a twenty five year old pair of 3a's, as I have both.
Not sure if this is relevant though. In general, the tweeters are similar, the mids and upper bass are better in the newer models, the lower bass is substantially better in the older models, and the cohesiveness and integration are better in the new.
The older models are also less persnickety. It seems to me Magnepan continued to evolve and perfect the speaker around what they saw as ideal set up conditions. The older models thrived on unconventional setup IMO.
