An inductor is simply a coil of wire which has been 'wound' to have certain electrical characteristics.
For crossover use, you have a choice of iron core, which are generally smaller, and AIR core, which while larger physically, also are difficult to 'saturate' or overdrive / clip, in a sense.
Magnepan uses Iron core since they take up much less space, for those crossovers IN PANEL.
Inductance is one measure of 'reactance'. Just read the first paragraph of the link.
