Yes the protection circuit is a good insurance policy.
Based on his tonal requirements I think he is barking up the wrong tree with the 606 and 909 (power rating regardless, - just based on sound quality and tone). I haven't heard the 405 so can't comment but the 606 and 909 are not warm sounding amps in my opinion, and sound a little bit coarse due to the high gain design.
