There are two crossover networks: The external bass-mid and the internal mid-treble. Upgrading the internal network will probably mean making an external box to house the parts because the upgrade components will not fit in the speaker. The cost to upgrade obvously depends on the parts you use but a reasonable estimate for the cost to do both networks is $700-1000. If you have trouble reading a schematic and converting that to a physical object then a DIY may not be a good idea.
The recommended alternative is an active line-level crossover (search the archives). The cost will not be that much different and the results will be far beyond what an upgrade will yield.
