The board is simple to install. Just two wires to solder into the filter network. The boards are available from several sources.
The worst part of the job is removing the rear screen.
Resistors won't work. They may help but you will never get 100% protection of the speakers and they will degrade the sonics. You can install a 1.5A fast blow dust in one speaker cable leg. This will give some additional protection with some sonic degradation. Again a fuse will never give 100% protection under all drive conditions but it is better than nothing I suppose.
If you cannot install the protection board then limit your amp choices to amps that swing no more than 30-32V output.
