yet one more 1.6 tweak: bypassing the push tabs

after bypassing the whole passive networks between my amps and my
1.6 drivers (i'm vertically biamping with a passive line-level
xover; see my mods page for details), the only stock element left
on my maggies were the bloody, probably steel nickel plated push tabs

i was tempted to solder the input wires to the drivers
tabs but then Ear came with a better solution: using flat
wires, to be inserted under the small, screwed plates which
support the ends of the drivers wires, so in close contact with them;
in this way you not only bypass the push tabs, but also get a
perfect contact between the input wires and the drivers wires
(both the woofer wires and the quasi ribbons)

to that end, i used the same flat wires, Goertz MI 1 (OFC, 13g),
but instead of removing the insulation film coat on each end with a
razor, i used direct fire to simply melt them, then sandpaper, both
coarse and fine, until getting about 2 cm of pure copper foil
on both ends of each piece of wire, of about 20 cm long

then i simply made a hole on each wire, on the driver end, for the
small screw to pass through, cut the wire until matching the needed
width, and voila, i screwed the wires to the drivers tabs (without
forgetting applying some Kontak before), which was a great pleasure
to do, even before listening!!

the other end of each wire was connected directly to the binding
posts of my amps, with no bananas or spade lugs, just through
the binding posts holes (some longitudinal cuts helped to do it),
with some Kontak as well

results: a BIG improvement in transparency, musicality and PRAT,
which is clearly noticed in terms of better resolution & dynamics,
cleaner bass, sweeter treble, and more natural timbres (especially
violin, piano and cymbals); higly recommended (thanks Ear)!!!

i've got just a doubt: i may cut the tweeters wires a little,
to get a more appropriate gauge, say 15 or 16, instead of 13,
which seems to be perfect for the woofers

best, paco
