RE: Heard a reference level planar speaker last Saturday

I am inclined to disagree. Depending on the Apogee model the frequency
curve is as flat if not flatter in some cases. The boys at Apogee
were not limited in the engineering skills. I have had the Caliper
and not even the sigs and was very impressed. Set up and proper
equipment make a big difference. I would have to say after owning.
MMG, 1.6, 3.6 and the ET VI and VIIIa's ( three times now) that
the Apogee in some ways had a better blending of the soundfield
from octave to octave. Could be bass heavy at times but depending
on the room was very realistic.
I believe the point that as been made as to VOICING of all of these
is very true. IMO, found the Apogee could be a bit dark but was
well made up for by the larger true mid range ribbon. Presently
I am using ET 8a's again and was suprised at the change in voicing.
The ET's and Maggies in my book are voice with a strong emphasis
on the mids. One thing that suddenly struck me was the loss of
lower mid range tonality that the Apogee has. In some ways
a quality the Magnepan and ET could use. To elaborate I am a
bass player of 35 years mainly jazz and soul and am well aware
of the tonality of most systems. Low frequencies these days
are being augmented with sub woofers which in my opinion sound
anything BUT natural. A boom and lack of damping are not what
I consider the true tonal character of a lower octave tone but
it seems to be the norm in many systems ( and their associated
setups). When say a cannon goes off in say the 1812 one should
have a clean and fast attack with little resonance or ring.
This is far from what I hear with most subs. The Apogee
when set up properly can give an honest reproduction of these
ranges and no or far less resonant ringing or hangover.
As for the curve of a good Apogee check out the specifications
on this review.....

http://www.apogeespeakers.com/reviews/caliper_sig_hifinews_dec1989.htm

this in the measurements section shows a +/- 2.5 DB 38-20,000 hertz
measurement

and in this article the concept of dynamic compression of which
the Magnepan and Eminent both are affected by.

http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue14/calipers.htm

This being the FIRST thing I noticed when going back to Maggie, ET
system...

As for myself the ET's are a temporary fix until I can get
back into a pair of say CAL SIGS...

just my 2 cents...

cheers....
