I think the one-speaker-at-a-time approach is a good one. It's just that it works for some things and not for others. That's a mistake that Harman makes in their speaker evaluations, they'll evaluate one speaker for tonality -- fine -- but as Toole points out in his book, you can't do a subjective assessment of the quality of a single dipole, it will be substantially lower than it will be in a stereo pair. This is less true of conventional omni/cardioid speakers, apparently because the latter spill more energy to the sides. So he found that the subjective quality ratings of the Quads increased disproportionately when he compared them to dynamic speakers in stereo.
