I understand that Corian makes an excellent, if pricey, baffle material.
When extending baffle size, some of the same concerns apply, e.g., changing the comb filtering from cancellation. Also, baffle glare could be a concern.
Anyway, I think you're probably right about the difference in extension between the 3.x's and 2.x's. Baffle size has a huge effect on planar bass. But the diaphragm is presumably also be tuned differently. Also, the 3.x's tweeters are only partially clamped, so part of the midrange segment presumably does contribute -- there's room at the bottom for a wider LF section.
