Here's a drawing of the new design just approved today by my wife, who called them LWingies (looeengies), which is now in the wings (pun intended). A comparative frequency scan is at the bottom. This is a major victory for me. My wife had rejected wood frames in the past, which was a blessing in disguise. This forced me to develop the Stixbees, a hidden way to reinforce the MDF frame. The wood in the Stixbees is now being upgraded from Red Oak to Bulletwood this weekend. Shortly after, the LWingies will be added. (However, the LWingies do not reinforce the frame at all. This will still be the job of the Stixbees.)
On and off over the last year, I've been experimenting with variations on wings (check MUG archives). Most of these experimental ones, I called wingies because they were smaller than wings. While in the past wings were intended to boost deep bass response, I did not want ANY more BOTTOM bass if I could avoid it. My MMGs in this room already had as much as I wanted down their physical limits, 40hz@ -6 db or so.
In my case, I was going after only a couple of dbs or so in the 100-250hz range, where my MMGs were a little weaker than I liked. In the end, the desired response improvement includes a "wing" that is both functional and decorative. Smaller wingies tune up the response. Together, they form the "L" shape.
The resulting LWingies design is very room specific in its tuning.
-- To avoid too much low bass boost, I had to raise the MMG almost 6". At this height, the lower end of the bass (with Lwingies) matches what I get when the MMG are on the floor, which was great when I had them there with no wings....(except, of course, for the weaker 100-2050hz range I wanted to improve).
-- That piece of wood at the bottom is a functional wingie, not just decorative. It is part of the "L" that joins to...
-- ...the 5.5"x53.5" wing down the side. This one goes on the mid/bass driver side.
-- Not shown here, there is another short wingie that is placed, not attached, on the inner side next to each MMG's tweeter. It is about 18" tall and 7" wide to close the gap to the wide equipment/TV rack that I have in the middle. (That rack, as I had come to realize, and tuned accordingly, is part of the reason I've always had good bass...a big center quasy-wing, in a way.) For decorative purposes, this wingie is usually removed...until I have the room all to myself...wife-mandated.
-- all the wingies and the tall wing are treated with absorption on the back side, for acoustic tuning. As far as I know, this is the only innovation regarding the use of wings, and it is absolutely required in my room. In fact, I suspect that the lack of its use may account for the low adoption rate of wings in the past.In effect, it all is almost an "L" with the serif, as this letter prints here. Cradled in it, is the MMG. Total dimensions of the prototype are 19.5"x53.5". My MMG are of the old design 14"x48" (newer ones are 15" wide, I believe). The wood for the LWingies is selected Poplar, with patterns somewhat different to the ones shown here.
