Not only are you obsessed, you're wrong. I have discussed this matter with a couple of well known amp builders and they both agree with me. Both say that a dampening factor of 17 is very plausible without a negative feedback circuit. Moreover, increasing the current feed can also affect the dampening factor, as indicated by Marantz.

The key was for them was:

Gain Control: Isolated by cathode-follower / phase-reversal circuit.
