First, congratulations. You have a really caring girlfriend. As someone else has mentioned, check the speakers out carefully when you get them. Older Maggies can develop problems so let us know ASAP if something doesn't sound right.

Some people place their Maggies with the tweeters inboard, but in a fairly narrow room such as yours I believe placing them outboard (on the outside edge) would be better.

Generally speaking a room which is almost square is not ideal, however, you have significant room treatments in it and complete control of furnishings and placement so that should help quite a bit. My only concern is that if your walls are completely covered with absorbent material, they may be too dead. Maggies are dipoles. In most rooms they sound their best with a mix of reflective walls with absorbent areas and some diffraction. You don't want to eliminate the rear wave from these speakers, you want to control it.

"I'm planning on having the speakers 3 - 4 feet from the wall behind them, and 2 feet from each side wall, and that will leave about 4 feet empty space between the two speakers, and when I'm seated on the couch they will be a distance of about 9 or 10 feet from my ears."

I think your math may be off. These speakers are 22" wide. On the 13 foot wall with 2 feet separating them from each side wall, you would have 5'4" between the panels and 6'4" between them on the 14 foot wall.

The only issue I would have with the amp is whether it will provide enough power for these speakers in an overly damped room. Maggies are 4 ohm speakers and very inefficient. Your heavily treated room may eat up the watts. You'll have to wait and see if that will be an issue for you.

Lastly, I presume your seating position will be against a wall. In a normally untreated or moderately treated room, the suggestion is for the seating position to be away from wall boundaries. I presume that be would appropriate here as well. If you move the seating position around 2 feet from the wall, it will also close the distance to the speakers. You might also consider moving the speakers farther out from the walls.

It will take a lot of playing around to sort things out. Moving the speakers and seating position an inch or two one way or another can change the frequency response and presentation noticeably. Your main issue I think may be an overly treated room.

At their best, on well recorded material in a well set up room, Maggies will give you a holographic image that will make the walls disappear. With your eyes closed, they can render a large acoustic space in front of you. Again depending on the recording, images will sound like they are coming from well past the speaker boundaries and the side and front wall boundaries as well.

Go luck and enjoy. Let us know how things work out.

Maggies, because you can never be too thin!

Mark
