Hi Al,
I know you are high on these Raptor amps, and I also know from your many posts here that you have pretty good taste in equpiment. Call me mystified because I have heard at least a dozen different Class D amps and not ONE sounds like real unamplified music (recording permitting). Not one. They all do something wrong with the timbre of natural instruments like violin, piano, horns etc., especially in the high frequencies. Also, all of the ones I have owned/heard sound too dry in overall presentation.I know you had Atmaspheres before so aren't you missing tone?? To me the big turn off of most SS and Class D is tone, tone, tone. They don't sound like the real thing.
Maybe the Raptors are different, I don't know. What is their technology (ie. ICE, hypex, UcD, proprietary)?
The best sound I got from my Apogees and from my Estats were either OTL or hybrid. Currently, I have a pair of Kronzilla DM monoblocks (also a hybrid but backwards from normal hybrids with those huge T1610 tubes from KR on the output being the only tubes in the amp) that I am in the process of reviewing. 42 SET watts but they drive my Acoustats (not a very easy load, BTW) up and down the street and it is the best sound I have had so far. Really incredible stuff.
