The trouble with your DIY stands is ....

that the bases you have made are too short - so your struts are far too vertical to really do a good job of bracing the MDF frames.

If you made a 'U' of some heavy wood which went behind the panels 2' (18" minimum) and projected 6" in front of the panels, then this would give you a solid base to work from. You could then have 2 braces coming forward from the back of the 'U' each side ... one to attach, say, 1' from the top and the second to attach midway between this and the base of the panel. Fix the base of the panel to the 'U' base and you've then got a good 3-point fixing.

THAT will keep them rigid! :-))

Of course, metal would be better (heavier!) but if you like working with wood, then you could certainly make much more rigid stands than you've done so far. The fact that you noticed such an improvement when you added the front strut should make it obvious that it will improve things to have the struts on more of an angle.
