You could certainly do what you describe, without peril. There is no problem following the Passive Output Stage with a resistive or inductive volume control, then feeding an active "buffer" stage such as oyu are using.
The Passive Output board is sized to stack on top of (or underneath) a RAKK dac board. The mounting holes match nicely, so only stand-offs are needed to stack them.
