Does "the voltage to be dropped" mean regulated voltage or voltage drop across the current source?
For differential stages I have found that the minimum current passed through the regulator results in the best sound. It's not a difficult-to-hear difference. The shunt regulator itself requires 3-4mA depending on the voltage setting, so I usually choose 6mA-10mA to provide that margin. I choose the higher amount for higher current circuits and the lower for more humble circuits.
