standard maxxed out

I recently bought a used standard maxxed out phono stage. It is about a year old. I am running directly to my mac 275 power amp. The problem is I am not getting enough volumn using the balanced connections. I get more volumn using the unbalanced connections. Also the switch on the back (xlr, rca ) does nothing. I don't know if this is a problem or not?
