It's possible that the bias offset is due to oscillation in that CCS. Have you listened to this yet? Oscillation is usually obvious as various spurious noises, like RF "birdies" or even hum where none would be expected. If it is oscillation, it can be cured with the addition of a small capacitor (~100pF 400V+) from the drain of the upper device to the source of the lower device.
