Your reasoning is correct. For the same swing with the same low frequency response limit a transformer that will have net current flow through the primary (SE) will have to be larger than one that does not have net current flow (PP).

On the second question, I will avoid stepping into the opinion pit due to lack of direct experience. There is no reason why one couldn't use a diff transformer coupled driver stage to push a SE output stage. I'm sure it's been done before, but I just haven't ever heard one.
