The advantages of removing the transformers are basically the same as would be the advantages and disadvantages of any active vs passive discussion. The active output is said to be a little more ...well just a little more. It all depends on your setup. In my case where I have a passive preamp attenuator..I'm thinking of converting my passive RAKK output stage to an active one...
To answer the question of what is the output of the DAC without the transformers..I guess the answer would be ...nothing...you have to have I/V conversion. Either with the transformers or with an active stage. I suppose one could have a I/V stage with just resistors but that way you won't have a differential output stage.
But first next week I'm going to listen to my RAKK DAC II (passive) in someone elses system on a sort of DIY day with a couple of kindred spirits.
To infinity and beyond!!!
