12 ga wire requires a 150 watt soldering gun to properly solder to. The Weller version of this is readily available in most home improvement stores (Home Depot, etc.) and is relatively inexpensive.

As a side note, I bought my first Weller soldering gun when I was perhaps 17 years old at the local home improvement store in California and saw on the label that it was manufactured in a place called "Apex, NC" and wondered where-the-hell that was. As it turned out, fortunately it wasn't hell, because I've lived there for the past 18 years. The company is now Cooper Tools and is still here, although I sincerely doubt if soldering irons have been made here recently.
