You could do this if you want, but that doesn't change my opinions about tube matching. Small mismatches may affect your perception of the quality of the result, but I doubt if I could hear them.

I'm not a matching fanatic, but "output tube balance" controls don't really solve the problem. They do, however, lower measured distortion if not abused and make us feel better. ;=)) On bad days I can be seen launching into minor raves about what matters and what doesn't. On good days I will agree that everything matters, but some things simply don't warrant the use of a limited supply of time. The latter applies in my mind to the issue of using a control of some kind to bring idle current between two output tubes that are "naturally" 5% different into perfect balance on a continuing basis. On the other hand, if the two tubes are 50% different, then I would just go out and buy new tubes, because the adjustment is not addressing the real problem, which is that the slopes of the two tubes are so far off that they will affect the audio result in a way that can't be balanced out by any control.
